9th April 2009 - David Eddershaw - The Real Larkrise to Candleford
We welcomed two more new members to our ever increasing group and after the euphoria of last weeks events had been mulled over and laughed about we settled down to hear our speaker.
David Eddershaw, a brilliant historian involved in Pakenham Water Mill, told us about the life and times of Flora Thompson the author of Larkrise to Candleford. We sat absolutely silent and spellbound. The subject and delivery was excellent, I have never known the institute so quiet for so long. We heard all about life of country folk in rural Oxfordshire and how hard family life really was and how prominent the class system was in Victorian times.
My grateful thanks to David for such an excellent talk. The competition for a piece of country poetry was won by Marion Sargent for her poem entitled The Jewel. After an easter raffle, scrumptious cake made by Janet and Val, an in depth discussion on what a good week it had been we went home.!!!
