APRIL 4TH 2018 – INVITATION VIST TO THE TIPTREE JAM FACTORY
We had a fabulous day at the Tiptree factory in Essex. The day started with a very welcome coffee and eats in the factory boardroom. First on the agenda was a tour of the farm and orchards on a tractor and trailer, not quite as primitive as it sounds the trailer was large, seated and covered and we had the most charming young man as our guide. The most amazing fruit farm with over a million covered strawberry plants, raspberries, mulberrys and the healthiest fields of rhubarb I have ever seen. Everywhere was so immaculate and strategically planned. On our return we were kitted out in hairnets and white coats and taken on an extensive factory tour overseeing the entire jam making progress from fruit sorting, cooking, bottling and labelling. Totally fascinating and incredible how much of the process was accomplished by hand. I found the labelling in Arabic especially intriguing. We were then treated to the most incredible lunch in the boardroom. After a shop and gin tasting session we boarded our trusty coach as always driven by Adrian and spent the next few hours at Freeport Braintree enjoying the obligatory Pakenham WI trip retail therapy session. A great, great day and a total freebie for our members.

APRIL 12TH 2018 – THE HISTORY OF THE W.R.V.S.
After being let down by our nominated guest speaker for the evening I stepped in and told the fascinating story of the largest volunteering organisation in British history. With the help of some excellent slides supplied by the RVS I was able to recount the organisations massive female contribution to the second world war conflict, when women such as ourselves excelled in every task known to man from refuse collecting, long distance lorry driving, canteen and hospital staffing and numerous other male orientated roles. After the war years their contribution continued through the cold war and beyond. Now the RVS the elderly members of the population are still served by the organisation now manned by both men and women. The refreshment girls were Sheila and Jennifer. We were especially delighted to welcome 2 guest for the evening Jenny and Meg.
