13th June 2024
St Nicholas Hospice is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary and recently, there was a special service in the Cathedral. George Chilvers works and volunteers at St Nicholas Hospice and was an extremely interesting speaker at our June meeting. We learned that post Covid, there were only six beds at the Hospice, but the number has since increased. George talked about the beautiful peaceful garden at the Hospice which patients (via special wide doors) and visitors can access.
To keep the Hospice going, approx. £17,000 per day needs to be raised. Approx. 500 volunteers support the Hospice and their various roles include: working in the charity shops, supporting bereaved adults and children, gardening, helping at fund raising events and so much more.
George also talked about the Nicky’s Way programme which supports bereaved children. Children meet, share memories and engage in various activities. Bereaved adults can access individual counselling and attend Bereavement Cafes where they meet & chat with other people who have also experienced bereavement.
